They say not all heroes wear capes

They say not all heroes wear capes, I get that now, you were there for every single one of your children even at our lowest

2015 and a Master’s degree later, I came back to Nigeria with so much hope

I struggled to find anything or stand on my own, you were so worried and unsettled

You supported me in every possible way and would pay my ticket to any part of Nigeria for a job interview

You would scold me for late nights and one point was at the gate waiting for me after considering going to the police

You were so proud to see me become more dedicated in church and would car pool with me for midweek and Sunday services

I had the opportunity to celebrate your 60th in 2016, and I made sure you got the ceremony you deserved even though you wanted to keep things small. She thanked me after saying “I only turn 60 once”

Finally, I came to you in 2016 to say I was proceeding to Canada and the look on your face was everything

It was like your prayers for me had finally been answered and a weight had been lifted

You would follow me around port harcourt from bank to bank trying to find a way to pay my fees

You went even further to set me up with some capital to stand on my own even as retiree

You ensured we all got the best under the circumstances, you fought for us with everything in you

Oh what a selfless woman you were, and I wish you had more time to reap the fruits of your labour.
